A Coast, a College, a Crime! #giveaway

Greetings, dear readers. I'm a college professor of linguistics living in a small town on the New England coast. I'm also a peace-loving Quaker, so you can imagine my surprise when I got tangled up with a murder and a drug smuggler in my author's story, 比特加速安卓! The book came out a couple of weeks ago.

The book has a story, too. This was her very first published mystery. But the small press went out of business last year, and the publisher who puts out her other series, the historical Quaker Midwife Mysteries, wanted to reissue the book with fresh editing and a new cover. Isn't it atmospheric?

Maxwell also wrote the story of what happened that summer, which she told in Murder on the Bluffs. My father disappeared back when I was a college student, and the mystery of what happened turns out to be tied up with the murder of a local businessman. I was out running along the bluffs above the beach when I found the body. This book is being rereleased next week and is up for preorder.

Hi gang,
We're at the old Idaho State Penitentiary for this quarter's team building event. When Matt told me he was thinking about booking us into an overnight here, I thought he was kidding.  What can I say, he wasn't.

The good thing is Dom, my St. Bernard, gets to come along with us. There's a courtyard in the middle of the lock in rooms and I can take him out for his business.  We're eating a picnic dinner out near the gardens and waiting for the evening's adventure to begin. Ian came along too. He's a pretty great boyfriend. That's all I have to say on that. 

Hope's a little freaked out but I'm sure the scare tactics will be all good fun. They don't advertise it as a haunted house adventure. The program is more about the history of the place. I'm looking forward to learning about Idaho's historical bad guys. Besides, I told her she can plan the next outing and I'm pretty sure we'll be doing something with glitter, just to pay Matt back. Sometimes I feel more like a babysitter than head chef of my own farm to fork restaurant. 

Anyway, someone's approaching the table wearing a prison guard uniform. If we don't survive the night, I wanted someone to know where we are. Just kidding.

Hayley: I am so glad we are finally getting the chance to meet in person. I’ve always thought we’d have a lot in common. And I want to hang out and eat with you and all your pals!

Sophie: It’s great to meet you too! I have a feeling you’re going to say that one of the things we have in common is dating cops. Just so you know, Wolfe and I are no longer in item. But you’ve ended up married to a detective. How’s that going? Does he get upset when you’re investigating?

Hayley: it wasn’t easy, not from the beginning and not now. He’s seen people behaving in the worst and most dangerous ways and so he worries about everything. To be fair, I’ve been described as nosy and dogged, and I can’t stop myself from helping a pal in trouble…You seem to get similar advice from your police friends. What pulls you into getting involved with solving mysteries?

Sophie: Good grief! People need help. How can you turn down a little girl who thinks her mother was unjustly incarcerated? Or a scared friend? I admire the detectives. They do an amazing job, but it’s not all just about DNA.

Hayley: Here’s one other thing we have in common—we both love having our friends around and often entertain. I come by it honestly, because my mom has always been a foodie who now has a catering business.  And I’m the food critic for Key Zest magazine in Key West FL, so I have to eat out a lot. And that makes the times we eat home on the houseboat even more special. You have so many drop-in guests and are such a good hostess. I can’t help wondering how you plan far enough ahead so that you can whip up a meal whenever your pals show up?

Sophie: I’m lucky to have great grocery stores close by so I can pick up something yummy on the way home. I know Nina will come over to gossip, and Mars likes the company. Plus they pitch in. Don’t tell them I said so, but I’ve trained them well! Bernie brought over tons of meat for a neighborhood cookout when we had a storm that knocked out the power.

Hayley: And one last thing we have in common, which I appreciate about you – it’s having old ladies as good friends. Miss Gloria was my roommate for several years and now she lives on the houseboat next door. She’s so full of energy and wisdom and love—my friends say she’s a role model for senior citizens. Tell us about the seniors in your life.

Sophie: Mostly it’s just Francie, my neighbor. She’s a hoot! I love how opinionated she is. She has no fear of saying exactly what she thinks. And she’s usually right!

 My own place. My own tea room on Cape Cod is open for business and reservations for the foreseeable future look promising.

At Tea by the Sea we serve afternoon tea in the traditional style. Think fine china, starched and ironed lines, sliver cutlery, fresh flowers on every table.  And arrangement of delicious teas. And, most importantly, light fluffy scones served with butter, clotted cream, and locally made jam. Delicate tea sandwiches, and delicious pastries.  We have indoor seating as well as a beautiful garden patio for you to enjoy.

Tea by the Sea is located near the town of North Augusta, on Cape Cod, close to the better-known North Truro. We’re in an old stone cottage on the property of Victoria-on-Sea, a magnificent Victorian mansion now serving as a B&B.  Victoria on Sea has acres of a beautiful formal English garden and is located right on the bluffs for magnificent views over Cape Cod Bay.

So, please, pay us a visit next time you’re on the Cape.  You won’t be disappointed.

Oh, pay no attention to the police officers lingering around the edges of the cliff or questioning people in the drawing room. That unfortunately incident had nothing to do with us. Really.

Well, if someone had asked me what 2024 was going to be like, I never would have predicted this. But it's not all bad. We're all safe and healthy here, and even getting back to work. Sort of.

Parker always had work at the wildlife center, since those animals still needed
care, but they were closed to visitors until just recently. Now I guess they are allowing families to visit by appointment. Very important since they need those donations to fund the center, and it's a great, safe way for families to get out and see the animals.

Drew loves the eagle. He squeals "birdie" and jumps up and down in his stroller every time he sees him. Scares the poor bird half to death. But his broken wing is almost healed, so it won't be long before we'll have to say goodbye to his new friend.

Liz won't let anyone else work at the toyshop but her. She even bucked up and
works the doll room! (Quite a feat for someone with her level of pediaphobia!)

She wants to keep us all safe, I know, and the limited business is barely enough to warrant one employee on premises. She did have a good idea, though. She bought a whole bunch of fun fabrics with toy and game designs on them from the local quilt shop. So whenever Drew is napping or watching Daniel Tiger, or when Parker is here to watch him, I sew face masks to sell in our shop. They're mandatory in our state, but Miles put them up on our website, too, so we're getting orders from around the country.

The ones I made for Liz have board games on them, but I think they make her miss the game nights we used to hold at the shop.

And I know a certain local PI, not giving any names, who may have bought more than one My Little Pony masks.

I'm stocking up on children's sizes, since we're still waiting to hear if, and how, school will open here in NY.

Dad is doing okay, but getting antsy to get out. He wants to be out patrolling Main Street, helping small businesses with their security. Not that there's much of a problem, but every now and then you get someone who doesn't want to comply with a business's safety rules and tries to take it out on the poor employees who are just doing their job. Fortunately that's pretty rare, and most folks are kind and patient.

We're all in this together. Be kind and buy from your local businesses when possible.

Hmmm. I could go for a Beef and Weck from Wallace's.

One of my favorite things about working at Mourning Arts in Victoria Town, Va., is the jewelry. We have an amazing collection of authentic Victorian mourning jewelry, along with reproductions for those who can’t afford the real thing, but still enjoy the look and sentiment. 

One of my favorite pieces is my Lover’s Eye pendant. It was a birthday gift. It’s not mourning jewelry, but it is Victorian. Mine is authentic. It inspires me to wonder who’s painted eye I'm wearing. Deep blue, with a tinge of jade. But the thing I love about it is the emotion expressed in the eye. Yes, one eye. Passion. Longing. Winsomeness. 

As I understand it, lover’s eye jewelry was popular in the late 1700s and early 1800s when aristocratic Englishmen and women often wore the miniature portraits of their spouse or lover. Because the tiny watercolors revealed only the eye, the subject’s identity could be kept secret. The eye portraits were fashioned as brooches, rings, pendants, and lockets. As far as I can tell,  fewer than a thousand antique lover’s eyes remain today, making them highly collectible. The pieces were originally referred to simply as “eye miniatures.” The term “lover’s eyes” was, in fact, coined much later..

Queen Victoria was also known to have been a fan of eye miniatures. She commissioned her Royal Miniaturist (goals!), Sir William Charles Ross, to paint various pieces as gifts. 

Some people, including Aunt Libby, are creeped out by them. (Even though she nearly worships Queen Victoria.)  To each is or her own. As for me, I’ll continue to cherish mine.
